Covey is a beautifully bred son of superstar sire Frankel. Frankel stands out as one of the greatest racehorses to ever set foot on a racetrack. An undefeated champion, he ended his career with a remarkable 14 wins in 14 starts, with 10 of those wins coming against Group 1 company. As a stallion, he has somehow lived up to the impossible expectations placed upon him and has become one of the greatest stallions of the 21st century already having sired over 100 Group winners.

On the racetrack, Covey started his career with lofty expectations and was a horse that seemed destined for Group Stakes races himself. After a neck defeat in his debut he won three consecutive starts by 4 lengths, 4 3/4 lengths, and 3 1/4 lengths at top English racecourses like Newmarket and Haydock. His fifth start came in one of the top 3yo races in England where he was favored in the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot. Against a 15 horse field he set the pace, but lost momentum late and settled for 9th. Since then his career has hit an unexpected skid as he hasn’t been able to find a return to top form.

Despite some setbacks, we have high hopes and high expectations for this new acquisition. On the surface his three US starts have been a disappointment. But, watching his races in England and comparing to his US starts, it is clear that he is a horse that has not had a trip in America that properly suits his running style. He is a horse that has done his best running while on the lead, and hasn’t had a chance to show that yet on US soil. Below you can watch a video of him from the Keeneland sale, he has a great walk, and the gallop video shows him moving really nicely. I also have posted his handicap win at Haydock which stamped him as a top English 3YO in training at the time of the race. He is a horse that we think can do big things in Ethan’s barn, and we hope it will be an exciting ride!
